Prime Minister Keir Starmer Outlines said that the UK will be more open to business with China, but he made it clear that this will not put national security at risk. Starmer's annual speech on foreign policy in London was meant to make clear the Labour government's position on China after months of mixed messages and growing criticism of Beijing's role in world affairs.
Starmer said that how Britain interacts with China will have a bigger impact on
the lives of British people than any other major geopolitical event. He said
that China is a defining force in technology, global trade, and international
governance. He also said that the UK needs to respond to China's influence with
a realistic and strategic policy. At the same time, he admitted that China is a
threat to national security that can't be ignored.
Starmer says the problem isn't weighing the benefits to the economy against the
risks to security. He said that protecting the country is still the
government's most important job and that they can't give it up in exchange for
easier access to Chinese markets. He said that strong security measures make it
possible to work together in areas where both sides can gain something. He said

priorities. He said that these areas need more security oversight and won't be
able to work closely with China. The prime minister also said that Britain
would put in place protective measures when necessary to protect its strategic
interests.
Starmer Outlines wanted to show that his foreign policy is based on a balanced approach
that doesn't shy away from working together but stays strong on national
security. His speech shows a bigger change in how Western governments are

power.
