Early intervention is needed: The exercise is one of a series of interventions being implemented by the Port Arthur Health Department in a bid to create awareness on the heart and early intervention. Through preventative screening and education sessions, the department is trying to preclude risk for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and hypertension.

Targeted outreach: While accessible to all adults, the screening focuses on persons with recognized risk factors, highest among which are hypertension, abnormally high blood sugar levels, or a history of stroke or heart disease within their family. All are typically symptomless and must be detected early in order to be effectively controlled.

Holistic education offered: Besides biometric testing, patients receive one-on-one health education. From monitoring and quantifying health indicators to achievable lifestyle recommendations—such as economic healthy food and exercise safety the course material varies.

Community benefit & incentive: Free services eliminate cost as a deterrent and make preventive health accessible. With the addition of a $25 HEB gift card drawing, patients are still motivated, offering greater access to the community.
