Key Highlights :
Stratus (XFG) strain is rapidly spreading in United States and Europe but WHO has low world risk.
Israel has low levels of cases today, which reflect regional difference in the impact of the strain.
Key Background :
The Stratus strain, or XFG, is one of the new SARS-CoV-2 global concern strains. Rising cases in the United States and Europe caused worry, but it's a low public health concern as categorized by the World Health Organization. That designation means based on available information, Stratus is not linked with severe or fatal status as compared to other strains.
In Israel, the rate of infection is negligible in comparison to other pandemics worldwide. There are numerous reasons for this, and some of the following are included: the high rate of immunity in the population, the passing of time during past waves of infection, and health policy and vaccination. These variations remind us that the same strain happens under different circumstances in every country.
Stratus is just one of a group of viral evolutionary enigmas that have developed in tandem with others like NB.1.8.1, or "Nimbus." Both are closely monitored for any increase in transmissibility as well as in immune evasion capacity. Initial studies indicate that although Stratus does have some degree of immune evasion, it does not bind as strongly to human cells as some of the other strains do. Most notably, the present vaccines and antiviral therapy are thought to continue protecting against serious illness due to both Stratus and Nimbus.
Symptomatically, illness from these newer strains is the same as with the earlier strains of COVID-19, cough, fever, sore throat, stuffiness, and fatigue. Anecdotal evidence is given for some presentations: Nimbus has been in some instances associated with horrible throat pain reported as "razor-blade throat," and Stratus infection results in hoarseness or scratchy voice, reported by some as having a similar presentation to the flu.
Such variants' appearance indicates the virulence of the virus and how frantic the pandemic is. Although variants may have a low risk in total, they create local outbreaks, particularly in environments of impaired immunity or underfunded health facilities. This emphasizes that sustained genomic surveillance, vaccine availability, and focus on public health fundamentals are of supreme importance.
Last but not least, though Stratus is not now an overwhelming threat to the world, en masse spreading of the same necessitates sustained caution, heightened surveillance, and adaptive countermeasures as COVID-19 continues to mutate.
