Inovalon and Google Cloud Partner to Tackle Healthcare’s Administrative Burden with AI

Key Highlights:

Google Cloud and Inovalon are co-developing an artificial intelligence -driven prior authorization solution to reduce clinician burnout and speed patient care.

The solution, powered by the Inovalon ONE® Platform and the MORE² Registry, will debut at the Empower summit in November.

Key Background:

Administrative complexity has been a defining challenge in the healthcare industry for decades, and prior authorization has been one of the most time-intensive and burdensome processes. Physicians are often asked to take large amounts of time navigating payer-specific policies and writing elaborate documentation prior to treatments and procedures receiving approval. Not only does this get in the way of timely patient care but also is a key driver of professional burnout and worker dissatisfaction, forces that continue to strain the healthcare system.

To solve this issue, Inovalon partnered with Google Cloud to create an AI-driven solution for prior authorization. The collaboration brings together Inovalon's extensive healthcare data assets and Google Cloud's advanced AI and machine learning platforms. This is aimed at creating an automated system for interpreting payer rules, identifying necessary documentation, and automating approvals, essentially liberating clinicians from much of their administrative time.

The solution is constructed from the Inovalon ONE® Platform and ancillary data infrastructure, the MORE² Registry. With in excess of 92 billion medical events and more than 414 million distinct individuals' records, the registry is among the world's largest healthcare data stores. The staggering data store will provide the intelligence necessary to render accurate, context-aware support across various payers and clinical settings.

Inovalon will unveil the innovation at its Washington, D.C. Empower summit this November. At the conference, healthcare executives and technology stakeholders will see first-hand how artificial intelligence can redefine administrative processes and bring new efficiencies. The demo will show the real-world potential of the system to remove friction, accelerate care delivery, and provide improved patient and provider outcomes.

Executive leaders at each organization have expressed confidence in the opportunity for the partnership to address healthcare's biggest challenge. Dr. Paige Kilian, the Chief Medical Officer of Inovalon, said administrative burdens that are "paralyzing" clinicians and driving burnout among staff are the biggest challenge that their new system aims to solve. Google Cloud's Aashima Gupta echoed this sentiment by emphasizing that technology must support clinicians by freeing them from obstacles rather than introducing them.

To the future, the partnership between Inovalon and Google Cloud can serve as a model for how AI can be leveraged to improve healthcare operations at scale. Through the elimination of inefficiencies and the aligning of clinical and financial objectives, the initiative has the ability to transform not only the prior authorization process but broader aspects of healthcare delivery between providers, payers, pharmacies, and life sciences companies as well.
